Default Minimum Spec for New Laptop to Run RST 2010

    Guys and Girls

My HP Laptop at home has died after five years of loyal service and I'm looking to replace. I do want to be able to run Revit at home for learning and perhaps bringing work home.

I can't seem to find a suggested min spec anywhere on the Autodesk Web site, on the old 2009 box or in the User Guide for RST 2010.

I don't want to pay an arm, leg and left spherical object, just get something that will last me say 3 years and then I can replace......

    Suggestions please........

I got a Dell Precision M2400 which has been very good for Revit 2009.

Display performance is worse with 2010. It has a Quadro FX370M graphics card, and these may no longer be ideal for Revit.

No word from Autodesk though on whether faster or Workstation cards are better or not though.

I would be tempted to by a Laptop with a faster GeForce or Radeon card now.

Thanks for the feed back Andrew

I've found this guidance document http://www.excitech.co.uk/Autodesk_2...specs_2010.pdf

Which is suggesting a Min 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 processor with 3GB Ram for Entry Level and 3.0GHz Intel Core 2 with 4GB for Mid Range.

What processor has the Dell Precision M2400 got?

They do suggest the Quadro FX370 ~ Entry Level and NVIDIA Quadro FX1700 Mid Range

    Andrew et al

Trying to find a laptop that meets even the Excitech Level Entry Spec within my budget has proved impossible..

I don't know how fast a M2400 Processor is but T3400 runs at 2.16 GHz but is this enough

Here is what I've found at Just under £500 but will they run RST 2010?

    Was 479 now £379 ~ Acer 5735z ~ Graphics Integrated ~ Processor T3400 2.16Ghz ~ 3GB RAM ~ 250GB Hard Disk ~ Windows Vista™ Home Basic ~ 15.6" Laptop

    £479 ~ Dell Studio 15 Black ~ Graphics Integrated GMA 4500HD graphic ~ Processor T3400 ~ 4GB RAM ~ 250GB Hard Disk ~ 15.4" Laptop

    £469 ~ Acer AS 5535 ~ Graphics Intel© Graphics Media Accelerator GL40 ~ Processor RM-72 2.2 GHz ~ 4GB RAM ~ 500GB Hard Disk ~ 15.6" Laptop

    £479 ~ Acer Gemstone 5520G ~ Graphics NVIDIA© GeForce© 9300 ~ Processor TL60 2GHz ~ 4GB RAM ~ 250GB Hard Disk ~ 15.4" Laptop

I'm even more confused now...Having talked to a large UK Company who are using RST 2010 I've heard that they have had problems with 32bit PC's and large models withiin the Excitech recommended spec and it's only the 64bit PCs that don't fall over.....so they are going to upgrade all their PC's to 64bit!!

There is a wealth of difference between me playing at home and our guys producing large scale models at work.

My 14" Precision M2400 has a 2.8Ghz processor and cost about £1200. They are expensive, but not compared to the cost of a Revit license.

The large screen models are a bit more expensive, but have faster Quadro cards.

Just to note, for us at least, faster Quadro chips are a waste of money for Revit and are no faster. The Quadro cards have been very stable for us, but are a bit slower in 2010 than they were in 2009. Others are reporting that 2010 is faster.

For home use, and playing around, any of the laptops that you have found would be fine. I would go for the Dell Studio myself, but I would go for one with a dedicated ATI graphics card rather than the integrated graphics. You dont need 64-bit for home use, only large complicated models.
