    Default dwg file association problem

I have autocad 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 install on my machine at work

even after i go into the registry and delete DWG from all classes entries
then manually tell explorer where acad.exe (choosing 2010) is, it still wants to default to loading autocad 2007.

is there a way to fix this?
is there a way to make sure that it always chooses latest install autocad?

    Thanks,

On my machine when opening a dwg in explorer it defaults to whichever version of AutoCAD was opened last.

opened a file explorer or just whichever version of autocad was opened last?

i have tried both opening 2010 and dragging a file into it as well as opening 2010 and double clicking on a file in explorer; the latter then opens 2007 rather than loading it in the already open 2010

Open an explorer window. Pick Tools\Folder Options\File Types. Scroll to DWG - it should say "Opens with AutoCAD DWG Launcher". This should make it use whichever version of AutoCAD was closed last. If it doesn't say that click the Change button and pick acad dwg launcher. Or, if you want to set it to use one version only, click the Change button then Browse to the appropriate acad.exe file.

    nice,

so why is it launcher and not the program itself?
    e.g. if i point it at C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Architecture 2010\acad.exe

did it want to use C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2007\acad.exe
when i told it not to?

    thanks,

I don't know why it was arranged that way but it's been like that for the past few releases. Before that, it pointed to the exe file.

Thanks for the info, but it doesn't work for one of our machines. Three of the installs work perfectly, but one machine is intent on opening 2009 from any file opened from explorer. Its a real pain. I don't suppose you have any other thoughts?

I had the same problem, and none of the above would fix it. The solution that worked for me was to go into the Registry (very carefully) and change a value.

    Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Scroll down and expand Applications\acad.exe\shell\open - click on command and then double click on (Default) in the right pane. The path shown there is probably pointing to your AutoCAD 2007 installation, just change the path to your 2010 installation, close the Registry and you should be good to go.

It worked for me, hopefully it will for you.
