    Default Pan joist system

Is there a way to put a tapered void in a slab to create beams and joists?

You could, but why not use the pan joist families that come with Revit?

We've had a real big problem with using the pan joist family that comes with revit. Squaring off pans that aren't perpendicular to beams was a hassle. Joists "randomly" unjoining geometry and having to go back and rejoin them. It was really just a huge hassle.

My company is new to Revit, and that was our first big pan joist job. Maybe we're doing something wrong, going about it the wrong way.

Technically you partially cut a floor with a hosted element that contains a void but it requires a large amount of effort and will hinder performance.

I too find that the out-of-the-box families are quite lacking.

The best advice would be to take a stab at improving the existing framing families to make them behave better.
Removing the autojoin feature is a big plus along with enabling the cut-by-face tool to cut the planks vertically are just a couple of modifications that will reduce the frustration.

I agree that trying to work with the Revit joist families is the best advice. Another reason to not model with solids and voids is that you will lose all of the parametrics that the joist families contain.
