Default Font symbols not as "simplex" as it seems

    hey everyone

I've got a friend that has a font problem... ACAD 2002...

He's in an existing drawing that uses simplex text style. He has encountered some text that has codes where symbols should be, ie. "~C" for the centerline symbol. The text editor character insert shows the symbols he wants to use, but when saving the changed MText, a "?" is shown on his screen. So, I have tried it and get the same results.

What's up with that? Anyone?... Buhler?... Buhler?... Anyone?

    TIA

    Mike

Still don't understand what's going on. The font is supported, the characters are there (as you can see in the attachment) and the symbol shows up in the MText Editor. What do ya think...

there is suppose to be an attachment to this message... let me know otherwise...

    Hi

That is the Character Map Table for a True Type Font, therefore if Simplex.shx hasn't the character (CentreLine) defined it will show as a "?".

As far as I'm aware only Simplex.shx that shipped with AutoCAD 2005 has the CentreLine character defined as standard.

Hopefully the thread I referred you to explained that....

    Have a good one, Mike

okay... I've tried everything I can to get it to work in ACAD 2002. The problem I was seeing was that ACAD was seeing "simplex.shx" and the character map was seeing "simplex.ttf". All of the symbols one would want are in the "ttf", I don't know how to see what is in the "shx" file.

In the text style manager you can't see "simplex.ttf" just "simplex.shx". So you're pretty much screwed. I can't even find a font that emulates Simplex or Romans.

You are correct, ACAD 2005 works fine.

    Hi

Check out the following Technical Document on the Autodesk web site under the Knowledge Base section -

ID: TS42355 - Some TrueType® fonts are not listed

Thanks Mike... It's all so clear to me now... NOT... but I get the hint... those symbols, such as centerline & property line, aren't going to work in ACAD 2002... At least not when using that font... are there any basic fonts, like Romans, that have the ability to use symbols in 2k2?

Thanks for the response... have a great weekend all...

    Hi

You can write your own special characters or have a search on the web for SHX Font Files, should find quite a lot (including ones that have special characters defined).

One side note, if you use a Non Standard AutoCAD Font File (one that doesn't ship with AutoCAD) you would have to remember to send that file along with all drawing files sent out of the office. If you didn't, outside recipients won't be able to read your drawing files correctly.

    Have a good one, Mike

Okay, I'm just struggling with the whole romans/dtext thing for my new office standard. Ideally I'd like to usethe virgin romans shx file, as it ships with AutoCAD. I've been frustrated in the past by getting files without their associated fonts, and winding up wondering what the wall thinkness really is on a TS8x8x? column. I thought I'd avoid this on my drawings.

Unfortunately, I'd also like to use stacked fractions. I'm not picky - they can be veritcal or diagonal - but typing 1-11/16" takes up a lot of drawing space in a small detail, so I'd like a better solution. I use dtext for most of my labelling because mostof my labels are one line, and Dtext does not require I grab the mouse and find the (x) to close the mtext box - an enormous waste of time.

The question is, is there a list of extended code characters somewhere? There's a lisp routine in another thread, but it didn't work, and despite my feeble efforts I don't know enough lisp to get it running. Alternately, is there a way to stack fractions in dtext?

    BTW - the %%codes mentioned elswher: - %%188 = 1 quarter
%%189 = 1 half %%178 = squared - just bring up characters in an asian character set for me.
