Default method for checking CAD drawings

I am looking for some ideas for the best way to check CAD drawings. I have tried creating a new drawing and xreffing the original in, then creating new geometry, dims etc, over the xref. the problem would occur with 1) which drawing users will update &
    2) unchecked changes made to the xref.......please help, I am desperate for better ideas!

use the MAP part of your software
it will track who made changes
and allow you to control who can do so

I tried this once and it worked OK but I didn't have time to do a full evaluation.

You could try using the revision settings/drawing manager available in the Utilities menu as well...this will allow you to track when changes were made, who made them, etc. You can even highlight what changes were made on a specific revision level.

Additionally you might also look into placing
user permissions on folders within the project folder
and restricting which users can edit what files.

This question almost seems like a cry for help.
Only the real help might not be any of our ideas.
This cry for help is all about user skills and ability
otherwise this user wouldn't be trying to put the
brakes on a runaway hand basket.
We all know that it is rare that a experienced user would move
the contents of an XREF or any file for that matter,
or explode a block, or edit the consultants file not our own.

Begs the question...Is this a quality control problem? Standardization and process management is incredibly important to surveyors (often the last line of defense). The people who ultimately end up being responsible often find themselves in a sticky situation when it comes time to ask the question...Is this information correct? Who created it? In what manner was it created? Maybe, I should just do it myself so that I know that it is correct...I've been there.

    Phil,

In my adventures providing training it is very prevalent that
many firms know they have certain problems. It turns out
that we explore both the source and the cure for those issues
while the users discover both what the software can really do
and how they can do it.
Over and over, the students point out how a certain task or function
would have made all the difference on some project gone astray.
And or how much time certain tools will save them everyday.

Although not all firms are willing to hold a training session
where the majority of the users attend. I do have the unique
opportunity to gather most of them together, and we find out
is the process the problem, or some user in the group that just
learned to NOT do it that way any longer. Sometimes the problem
is as simple as the user not knowing the desired process, and
others it is just not having thorough knowledge of the software tools
    on-hand.

all this is very good but is there a specific procedure for checking a layout, for example?
