Default Beam cutback in plan for wood beams

I am setting up a framing plan in a project that has all wood construction. The second floor framing is 2x8's bearing on 5 1/4" x 16" parallam beams. These beams are setting on wood parallam columns. The only way I can get the "stick" beam framing in plan to cut back the correct way is to raise the top of the columns to the top of the beam (like the beams are framing into the sides of them). If I model it correctly (with the beams on top of the columns) the beam in plan does not cut back. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

If you setup in the families an additional instance parameter to control the analytical model you may find this easier.
