    Default AutoCAD and Windows 7

    I've been experimenting.

Installing stand-alone versions of vanilla AutoCAD on the latest versions of Windows_7 (the retail versions will be the same) running in Sun VirtualBox on an earlier pre-release version of 64-bit Windows_7.
No great amount of testing done - just "will it install?", "will it run?" and a little drawing.
I think it can be assumed that LT versions and verticals will behave the same as the full versions.

    Code:
    Win version.............Acad version
    Win7-7600-x86...........A2007(32).....A2008(32).....A2009(32+64)
    Install.................yes...........yes (*2)......yes (32)
    Run.....................no............yes...........yes (32)
    Run despite.............yes (*1)......n/a...........n/a
    "known compatibilty problems"

    Win7-7600-x64
    Install.................yes (to x86)..no............yes (64)
    Run.....................no............no............yes (64)
    Run despite.............no............no............n/a
    "known compatibilty problems"
    Run as administrator....no............no............n/a
(*1) alert message says there are known compatibility problems. The only "fix" suggested is to buy a later version of AutoCAD - ignore this and click the "run software" button. Obviously, this involves a risk.

(*2) you may see a message that Explorer is running and needs to be closed even though Explorer is NOT running - click the "ignore" button.

    A surprise -

A2005 WILL run on 32-bit Win_7 in XP+SP2 compatibility mode.

Whatever won't install or run on Win7, I just install on a VM running XP.

How is the performance with this setup? Our IT department is saying the performance of the VM running XP is terrible.

I use VMWare on my Win7 64-bit machine to support older apps. The performance is not terrible.

I haven't used VMware for a while - can you now get access to your graphics card's full abilities?

I installed acad mep 2011 64 bit on a nice shiny Dell xps 4 core i7 chipped macihine with Windows 7 64 bit OS. When you start acad, and open multiple drawings, it opens multiple sessions and burns up the available resources on the computer. How do I stop it from opening multiple sessions? Is there a switch somewhere?

    P.S. I have SDI set to 0. I installed 2010 64 bit and don't have this problem.
