Slow drawing

I am currently working on a drawing in AutoCAD2004 and selecting items either by clicking on them or with a window causes a 2-3 seconds lag each time between the time the object is picked and the time it shows up as being selected. The drawing is 1.4megs in size, survey data is x-refed into the drawing, I currently have 8 tabs set up, I purged and audited the file a few times as well to no avail.
I also opened the Windows task manager to check what happens when I select an object and the command results in a CPU usage of 100%.
This does not happen in any other drawing so I also blocked out all the linework and inserted it in a new drawing to get rid of some of the "invisible" stuff that clings to a drawing and slows it down but that did not improve the time lag.
I could use some hints on what could cause this problem and how to remediate it.
