Default Linked file not showing up?

I have a strange issue where we are linking a model and the only thing that shows up are the grid lines, and only 'new' grid lines. I started a brand new project and linked the file in just to see if something had been messed up along the way, but again, only the grid lines showed up. Another user did some messing around and was able to get the linked model to show up but only by changing the link display settings to one of the views already defined in the model that we are linking. That's an ok workaround, although weird that it's the only way to get it to show up. The problem is that we can't create a new view that isn't setup in the linked model already, which is a pain.

I've messed around with view depths, cut planes, turned all visibility on and am stumped as to why just the grid lines show up. I went into the linked model and turned on everything I could there and then tried reloading the link, nothing either. Anyone have some insight on this?

I should add that the everything in the model that is being linked looks fine.

If you go to a 3D view can you see anything? Could they have created worksets that are not visible by default in all views? This is a selection when creating worksets.

I have to apply the 3D view from the linked file to see anything at all. The default 3D view (clicking on home) shows nothing. If I draw a line and zoom extents, it just zooms to the line in 3D view. I'll check on the worksets thing.

Check phasing to assure that the host and linked model are synchronized. Otherwise, it has to be Workset visibility. In Manage Links use 'reload from...' and then chooses the drop-down to verify that all Worksets are being loaded.

I am pretty sure that AJH is correct here. If all you see is Grid, which by the way are not affected by phasing in Revit, than your default views in the template are more than likely all New Construction or some phase that is not mapped to the phases in the linked model.

That was the first thing I checked, all views were set to "Show All". I messed around with the phase filter just to see if I could get something to show up, but didn't get anything. Just reloaded from and selected all the worksets, nothing.

My next step is going to be to copy/paste the model to a new file and try linking that, the issue is with the file being linked, I just can't figure out what it is.

Try this. In the arch model create a new workset and make sure the visible by deffault in all views is checked. Then delete one of the other worksets. It will ask you to delete all of the elements or move them to a new workset. Move them to the workset YOU created. Save then reload into your model.

That worked, thanks! Now to figure out why the archs/structs created a million worksets and none are visible by default when that is the default option.

Well, most do not know that it affects other disciplines. I'm sure they were doing it for their own benefit. However there are other ways to accomplish the end benefit.

I'm not sure if this is a feature or a defect. I recall that this information has been posted somewhere in these forums previously.

When Worksets are not visible by default in a linked file, the display of those Worksets is disabled is a host file.
