    Default Painting Families

I'm looking to add materials to families in my model but when I go into the family to paint it I have very limited material choices (default wall, default light source, default roof, etc.). I have linked my materials to the correct folder in the options tab. Is there something else simple I am missing here?

Materials are not stored externally. Just the images used for rendering. All other information is in the project or family.

Use transfer project standards to copy the materials from your project to your new family. Or create new ones right in the family.

Step further, don't define materials in the family at all. Instead assign each to a parameter for a material. This lets your users define materials in the project using their own set of materials. If there are only a pre-defined set of materials and the user should only be able to choose from them then it makes sense to embed them in the family....think manufactured items that have a set palette of colors.
