Default Anonymous Block Created when exploding or pasting

I am updating a previously created drawing with dynamic blocks and notes. When I bring in objects from the previous drawing and then delete them, a whole slew of blocks are created with the prefix *U or *D followed by a number. While I can purge these easily, it will be a pain when we insert the dynamic block into another drawing. If the block is exploded and then deleted, the new drawing ends up with these "phantom" blocks as well.

So the question becomes, why are these being created and how can I get rid of them? I am working in 2009.

Apologies if this has been addressed previously. I'm not sure what to call these blocks.

Those anonymous blocks are inserted DBlocks that have been modified from their default condition. Anonymous block definitions are automatically purged when opening drawings, so there isn't much need to manually do it.

I opened the drawing in question, exploded the block, saved as a test and reopened. The *D blocks are still there.

From what I am reading, these are dimension objects perhaps created when I copied and pasted from an older drawing. If I don't copy the dimensions in, I get a cleaner drawing.

*D blocks are indeed anonymous associative dimension blocks. Once again, if the dimensions are deleted, the next time the drawing is opened they are automatically deleted.

For either set of anonymous blocks, there is no need to be so concerned. AutoCAD will clean up the drawing automatically.

Was Eagle Point used on this AutoCAD drawing at some point? If Eagle Point was used to annotate lines & curves, it creates anonymous blocks with the U* & D* as you described. the anonymous blocks are blocks made from text. if the text blocks are exploded then the anonymous blocks can be purged.
