    Question Update Xrefs Automatically?

I know that if an xref changes while a host drawing is open, AutoCAD will notify the user that the xref has changed and they can quickly reload it from the notification or from the xref manager. I also know that it will automatically be updated the next time the host drawing is opened.

I have a user that just asked me whether the xref could automatically update while she's in the host drawing, rather than just notify her (maybe on the next regen or save, kind of like fields do). I know that AutoCAD does not currently do this, but I want to be able to give her a good explanation of why. Any takers?

    Thanks!

    Hi

I was sure I saw something like this in the ACAD 2005 Wish List Forum (if it's there I can't find it now).

What doesn't the User like about (or find slow with) right-clicking on the "Manage Xrefs" icon and choosing "Reload Xrefs" (refer to attached image).... personally I don't think it gets much easier. The only drawback I can currently see with adopting that method is AutoCAD reloads *all* Xrefs, even one's that have been "Unloaded" (for what ever reason).

    Have a good one, Mike

To put my two cents in... I think the new notification is aw some BUT... I wish the commands on the notification were reversed... Using your image as an example... It should work as follows, If someone edits the xref called "childxref" and it pops up with this notice.. it tells you that that is the one that needs reloading...You should be able to click on "childxref" and it just reload that xref....currently is opens the xref manager. It should be that if you wanna go into xref manager you then right click on the notification and then select xref manager. because 9-10 times you just want to reload it. Theres once in a while where you want to open the manager. so...

9 times out of 10 right now I have to do two clicks to reload xrefs (and yes sometimes it sucks cause it reloads all)

where if they where change it to just clicking the name of the xref to reload that it would be 1 click 9 out of ten times.

I would not be surprised if some of the arx and lisp guys could not make the link on the notification do a reload of that specific xref instead of xref manager????? Hint Hint

k- sorrry, ill go back to work now....

Thanks for the response, Mike. I know it's really not hard to reload...unfortunately, it's not always enough for people when I just try to tell them the easy way to do it...they just want a reason why it doesn't do what they're asking.

But sometimes I just don't have an answer why, so I guess they might just have to accept that in this case, unless I hear from some others.
I thought maybe it had to do with demand loading or something, why it couldn't automatically reload...I don't know.

    Thanks!

Given the current method of reloading, an automatic reload could cause an error, especially if another command is active. We already know that the automatic saves will disable any function in Autocad while the save is being completed. For me, the demand reload is the way to go.

That sounds plausible...I could see that as a good explanation.

    Thanks!

I think Bbapties' suggestion would be a good wish list item.

actually - can I repost my wish there or can a portion of this be moved ??? Id rather just repost cause I can start a new thread...sometimes when a thread is moved people don't read it in its entirety cause they believe they got the gist and move on...they may not see the actual wish item....

** just checking before I repost and get in trouble for it. **

cause i would actually like to post duplicates in lisp, arx, and vba to see if someone has a work around....

    Hi

Please post away in the ACAD 2005 Wish List Forum.

Please don't post the same question multiple times in a number of different Forums, all except one will be removed in accordance with the AUGI Forum Guidelines.

Thanks for you understanding and support on this matter,

    Mike
