    Default Layer states and Layouts

I'm having an issue. Well, to be honest, I have MANY issues, but this one is AutoCAD specific. Up until about 6 months ago I've been on 2004. Then I upgraded to 2009 and have been mostly happy with the upgrade (just wish I had more time to work on learning the new features of it). Then, today comes along. In 2004, if I was in model space and saved a Layer State, then when I switched to paper space, I could restore that Layer State and all would be golden. In 2009, I realized today that if I do the same, the Layer State saved in model space is only affective in model space. Ok, I can adapt, I'll just make a duplicate LS in PS. The problem, the only way the LS works is if I'm in a viewport. It doesn't work at all if I'm just in the Layout in general.

Does anyone have any suggestions, know what I'm missing, have any clue what I'm doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance.

Try switching to the model tab to save the layer state. You can restore it anywhere.

Because of all the new viewport overrides to save all the layer settings for a viewport in a layout you need to be in the viewport to save the Layer State. Messy if you have a lot of viewports.

I tried that model space thing and when I switch over to paper space, nothing happens.

You switched to the Model Tab, set up and saved a Layer State, switched to a Layout Tab, and was unable to restore the Layer State?

I'm not sure we're understanding you correctly. If I save a LS in the Model tab (i.e. TILEMODE=1) then change to a layout tab (TILEMODE=0) and am not inside a viewport's model space (CVPORT=1), then it all works perfectly for me. If I'm inside a viewport's MS then it depends on the LS option for "Visibility in Current VP".

There's 2 things I can think of which may act slightly different.

1st (this should have been available in 2004 as well), if you've VPFrozen layers inside a VP's model space. Thawing them in PS should not affect the VP's display.

2nd There's a new thing since 2008. Called viewport overrides. This is much like the VPFreeze, but basically does the same idea for colour, linetype, etc. Also available as an LS option called "Apply properties as viewport overrides".
