Elevation tagging on sloped slabs, roofs...

If you want to place an elevation datum on a sloped floor or roof, you may have noted that the tool won't work unless you place it along the edge of the floor or roof object.

If you want to place the elevation datum elsewhere, try this workaround: create a new generic model floor hosted or roof hosted family, depending on which object you're wanting to place the datum on. Create a 1" x 1" x 1" void in the family and use the cut geometry tool within the family to ensure that the void is cutting the host.

Load the family into the project and place it where you want to have the datum. Zoom in close to the "nick" in the object you've placed, and the elevation datum tool will now work.

OK - I'm lost. This does work in a 3D view, but it doesn't work in plan

Yes, you're quite right.

I'll only used that method for 3D sketches previously and assumed it would work equally well in plan. In fact , I'm at a loss to see why it doesn't, - if the work plane is set to the sloping element and the spot elevation works perfectly in 3D, it should work the same in a plan view, instead of only picking the ends at levels.

A work around for plans --- Split the face ( if a floor or roof ) and then you can get the spot level to pick the split line.

A work around for elevations is to place a reference plane where you need the spot elevation, then change to an elevation view and you can then place a spot elevation where the RP intersects the sloping plane.

The split face tip is a good one... no point adding a void to your project unless you want your slabs to have a 1" deep hole in it

Could the Factory explain why the spot elevation tool doesn't work on sloped slabs in plan views? Why do have to select an edge? I would like this on the list of projects for the coming year!
