    Question Joist Plan Representation

I'm wondering if there's a way to represent joists in plan with a line that's not the entire length of the joist, but a short line that shows up in a coarse view in the center of the overall joist length.

I'm trying to open up a little real estate on a 1/16" plan and would like to have some varience in representing the joist without affecting the modeled joist length.

I haven't had any responses yet so here's what i did for the time being:

Created 2 seperate joist families, added a full length symbolic line on one, a short symbolic on the other.

For some reason, the 'web joist' line wants to show up in the plan view no matter what, so i set the color of 'web joist' projection line (within the structural framing portion of the model categories in the visiblity/graphic overrides dialog box) to white and created view templates to manage.

Does anyone know if there are any other ways to accomplish this?

Have you tried playing with the Structural Settings? I'm not sure if this is available in in the Architecture flavor, but under Settings --> Structural Settings there are settings you can adjust. The one it sounds like you want to adjust is "Symbolic Cutback Distance" - you can set the symbolic cutback of: Brace, Beam/Truss, & Column.

Edit: These are available in Revit Structure, unsure of the others.

Thanks for the tip Richard - I will definitely use that for adjusting beam joins on plan.

Unfortunately I'm trying to get 2 different lengths of symbolic representation for the joists - a full length line to represent the boundary of identical joist sizes and the short symbolic line representing the number of identical joists (like in the old days).

In your joist family you can create a parameter to the end of your symbolic line which will allow you do change the cutback of the symbolic line.
