problem with labeling contours in C3D 2010

I'm having a strange problem with labeling contours in C3D 2010. I have my label style set how I want it. I go to add my lables (using the single contour label command), and sometimes a proper contour elevation label is added, but other times it just adds a tick mark (similar to something you would see on an alignment. I have tried tweaking every style setting I know of. Does anybody have any ideas or thoughts?

Can you post a sample showing the problem?

My guess, you created your surface from contours that are, for example, 1' contours. The surface you created are displaying 2' contours. The ticks that show up are not on a contour, they are on a polyline that you used to create the surface. Change the surface style to a tighter interval and hopefully your labels will magically appear.
