saving workset files as separate files

I have been given a file from another consultant that was part of a workset. I think it was saved without relinquishing back to the central file, thus locking me out of saving as a new file. The message says the file was created by another user and therefore wont allow me editing rights as I am a different user.

How can I get around this problem and save the file as a new file?

Open it as a "Detach from central" file, then save it using the Options, make it a new central. Also, you can look at the user name that has it locked, then copy the file to a new local name, temporarily change your Revit User name t that of the individual that locked it, open the newer copy, and relinguish all, and save to central. Change your Revit User name back to yours.

what does it mean if the "make a central file" button is grayed out? and not an option?

When you use Detach from Central and then Save the file it IS going to become a Central File so there is no need to check the option. It is only available when you open the file and use Save As (instead of Detach from Central).
