    Is this possible to add background mask to dtext without using express tools.

    as far as I know, it is only possible to add a background mask to mtext without express tools, you could also add a wipeout without using express tools, but it wont be linked to the text.

    If you are using 2010, (or several versions earlier for that matter) then it is an option in properties to use a background mask. It is called "fill color" in the dimensions. Just set the color to "background."
