Default How to connect existing and demo duct runs?

I'm trying to create an HVAC demo plan where some of the duct runs are broken up halfway down a run. I need to be able to have one portion of the run shown as demo and another portion as existing. I understand that I am connecting two seperate systems, and that's why it converts the entire run to either demo or existing, but I know there's a way to be able to do this.

The help menu is sending me in circles and I can't quite figure it out. What's the quickest way to accomplish this?

Don't actually connect the two ducts. Hold down the Ctrl key as you nudge the ducts together.
