    Question Unresolved Xref

Upon openning one of my drawings, one of the xref'd files comes up with the status of "Unresolved".
If I reload the file it is fine. Save, exit.
Re-open same drawing file and xref comes up "Unreferenced". (lather, rinse, repeat)
I can open the xref file, fiddle with it to my heart's content, audit, purge, whatever. Save, exit.
Re-open 1st drawing and the previously mentioned xref comes up "Unreferenced". Reload file, all is well. Save, exit.
Re-open and, well, I think you get the picture.
I have scoured the ACAD help to no avail.
    Any ideas?

Are you saving the path after reloading the XREF?

I've seen this happen with long layer names in the xref file.
Like say you have a file, we'll call it "Teds_Awesome_Base.dwg"
and it has a layer named "G-ANNO-TEDS-STRUCTURAL-TEXT".
So when it's xreffed into another drawing the xref layer name is:
    "Teds_Awesome_Base|G-ANNO-TEDS-STRUCTURAL-TEXT"
Which is wicked long.... it would need to be shortened.

Just a thought, I've fixed this exact issue before.

In such cases make sure EXTNAMES=1. This allows layer names of at most 255 characters, otherwise they're limited to 31 and most punctuation would also cause errors (including spaces).

Another point to note, the folder path can also become very long - especially if you save a full path. Try changing the xref path to relative and see if that sorts the error.
