Default How To: Quick 3D Details!

Revit 7.0 – How to Create Fast 3D Details!
    1. Start a new session of Revit 7.0, with the default template.
    2. Draw a wall 10 feet or so long (Use the Basic Wall: Exterior Brick and CMU on MTL Stud, any wall will do but this is for dramatic effect.)
    3. Load a Window Family: Casement 3x3 with Trim (again, any window would do).
    4. Place the Window near the middle of the Wall.
    5. Go to View on the Design bar, Choose Section.
    6. Change the Section Type in the drop down list in the Options Bar to Detail View: Detail.
    7. Draw a section through the window sill in plan.
    8. You’ll have something like Figure 1.
    9. Create a 3D View by hitting the 3D button in the Toolbar. {3D}
    10. The new 3D View will appear, and you will see something like Figure 2.
    11. Go to View Pull down, select Orient, the select To Other View.
    12. Pick Detail View: Detail 1 from the list.
    13. You will see something like Figure 3. Not really impressive yet…..that’s just a section! But wait, this is a 3D view…..
    14. Hold Shift key, click and hold scroll wheel and drag down towards the left. (Dynamic View Spin)
    15. Figure 4 appears, and you have an instant 3D detail that shows both Jamb and Sill conditions at the same time! (I've adjusted Detail level to fine, set the scale to 1 ½" = 1’-0", and turned off the crop region.)
    16. Adjust crop region before turning off if necessary!
    That’s it! Awesome!

*This will work in 6.1, but you must be in shaded mode. 7.0 allows Hidden Line Scope Boxes.

Yeah, it's nice! You can also take a shortcut and skip creating the section - just turn on the section box and make it really small. This way, you can also make a perspective detail.

Wow, thanks for the great tip! this rocks! Then simply annotate it, and you're done!

Turn on the new outline silhouette feature within the Advanced Model Graphics to make it look real nice!

Now, if you want to take a little more time in your families, you could embed the 2D drafting details into this window family. When it was cut, you would see the studs, trim, etc.

I'll experiment and post results later!
