    Default Concrete Beam

    Hey guys,

I have 2 concrete beams in a "L" shape, configuration.
Both beams are 3000x600mm and at the same elevation.

However, it is not actually and "L" shape, as only part of the beams intersect.
The north-south beam would pass the face of the east-west beam by aproximately 1000mm and vice versa.

Revit seems to be a bit of a smart *** and thinks that I want to complete the "L" shape and does it for me.
In fact, revit treats them as "joined" because it asks me for my permission to unjoin when i try pulling the shape handle of my first beam outside the geometry of the 2nd beam.

However, the unjoin tool doesn't recognize the beams.
Neither does the beam/column joint tool.

Short of doing this beam as a floor, is there anything I can do?

    help and thanks

Just like my last 2 threads, you're out of luck. Opening by face is the only way to do this. However, if you change anything about the beam, you'll have to go back and fix the opening by face that you've applied.
Fill out a support request, they'll add your firm to the list of firms that have already pointed out this flaw to Adesk. Not sure if/when they will fix it.

I think I remember running across a similar problem when I was using RAC2009. We changed the material of the beam (same visual - just different name) and that seemed to fix it. Not sure this will work here, but worth a shot I think.

You could do that, but it will screw up any material take-off. Not to mention, that's not a good practice to get into. It's all 4000psi, nw concrete. Now if you have different strengths and mix designs going in, then I can see that making sense. Otherwise, I'd say that's the wrong way to go about it.

If your not using them for analysis, you can open the family and change what material type it is to steel, pre-cast or other. This will allow you to place 2 beams with the same materials that do not connect.

These options are for 3rd party companies to allow them to recognise analytically what the member is, however it would be nice if Autodesk opened the options up to us to allow us what joining conditions we want specific families to have, as well as cut/join priorities when it comes to walls/floors.
