I am having the same problem. When I go into edit a group, I lose my group tool bar, and can't get it back. I can keyboard shortcut my way out, but I lose the functionality of removing elements from the group and such.

I've searched behind windows and such, and even tried deleting the UISTATE.dat file, but with no luck.

I found it!!! Reset your monitor to one screen only and the floating tear away panel will appear. For some reason, it gets lost in dual screen mode. I looked all over the monitor and 40" flat screen (yes I am that much of a dork) and couldn't find it. I then dragged it back up to the ribbon so it remains attached to the ribbon. I'm not sure why but that seems to be the only panel that defaults to floating.

You might need to delete the UISTATE.DAT file in the Revit program folder to "reset" the interface. It might return the tab to where it belongs, but it will get rid of any other customization you have done to moving your properties pallette, browser, and other stuff around.

where is this UISTATE.dat file supposed to be located? I found it once on another computer, but I can't remember where it is on a new computer. windows search hasn't helped.

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011\UIState.dat

Because "consistency" is not a word that Carl demands his company understand.

Hmmm... I'm having the same problem, though I'm on RS2010 with dual screens. I tried both of the following:

^ Reset to single screen display and have been dragging everything, everywhere. Still haven't found the tear away panel.

^ FG and CG are not working. And I deleted my UISTATE.dat file and have had not success finding the Tear Away Panel.

    Any other suggestions?

Why? Because users told us they wanted it that way. In the past, the group editing functions were "in canvas". When we moved them to the ribbon as a panel, we heard "we want them back in the canvas". So really nothing to do with Carl or consistency....just listening to our customers.

    Leanne,

Using FG and CG works for me.
Check that you have FG and CG set as shortcuts in the Keyboard Shortcut option.

I had this problem recently and couldn't find the group tools no matter what I did (UIState didn't work for me).

I was able to fix it by opening a new job using the out-of-the-box template and creating a group with an object (column, wall, etc). The group ribbon appeared floating in my screen (finally) and i was able to pin it to the ribbon toolbar.

Re-opened my job that was upgraded, and the group tools now appear in the ribbon instead of floating somewhere off my screens.

OK. I followed your suggestion and I still have issues editing the group and finding the Group Editing tool. BUT, maybe this can be of help to some...

Maybe it's my method of going into the group to edit it. Looking at the attached picture, if you scroll down to Groups and right click on the group you want to edit, the pop-up menu actually lists TWO "Edit" options. The first one, at the top of the list is greyed out. The one further down in the list is black. I clicked on that and that's when I run into problems.

I have better luck, editing the group, if I actually either hunt the group down (or click and drag to place a new one) and then chose the group. This gives me my "Modify Model Groups" tab with the Edit Group option. If I chose to edit the group here, I have all the tools I need to add/remove/finish/cancel/etc.

    Hope this helps someone.
