Default Show steel as glass in 3D shaded mode

Is there a way to show the steel model almost like a glass material? I've tried setting the structural link to HOST VIEW and modified the material for structural elements, but the only thing that works is setting the model to transparent which makes it nearly impossible to see the structural elements. I'm hoping to create a type of 3D coordination type of view. I want to be able to see the steel but I don't want there to be too much emphasis on it.

    Matt

I don't think materials work like that through a linked model.

Go into the linked file and change the transparencies. save a view.
In your model Specify that view.
