Default "Label Annotation 3_32.rfa" - Instance parameter?

I feel like I am missing something incredibly obvious here, and I've done plenty of searching to no avail. I've created a detail component family, with a generic annotation family nested in.

When I load the family into my project, I want to be able to change the text of the generic annotation family (which is an instance parameter) without having to go to Element Properties.

Is this possible? I've attached a copy of the .rfa file for reference.

No, you are spot on. Unfortunately the Instancenisity (?) of a parameter does not carry through nested families meaning you can not just make the labels listen to you when you click the detail component. This seems more like an annotation component than a detail component though. Could you make the whole symbol work as an Annotation family instead of a Detail Component?

I wanted to be able to have an instance length parameter that I could stretch - so I went with a detail component family.

    Thanks!

I think that if you create another parameter in the family that is hosting the detail component, and assign the instance parameter in the nested detail, you should be able to control it that way. What I've found when dealing with nested families, you may need to re-create your parameters over and over again depending on how many times you nest a family. lots of repetitive work, but it's the only way to make it work.
Take arrayed families for instance, you need to create a family, then create a new family that that gets nested into so that you can array it. Any parameters in the original family need to be recreated in the array family. You then need to array the family. But if the array needs to go into another family, all that needs to be done again in order for it to work correctly in the final family. Slightly ridiculous in my opinion.

Unfortunately that's what he has done in his model and it is not allowing the Instance Parameters of the Detail Component to "listen" when he clicks on them. So he has to go into the detail component properties to change the parameter each time.

Sure enough...I hadn't looked at the family. I guess that works for just about anything else except text?

The issue is that with other parameters that you can control that way you are given a control (drag bars, etc) and not true "listening" parameters [that run blue when you select them]. The Label is listening for the detail component to assign a value to it but there is nothing in the detail component to listen for that value. I can understand not having labels in a detail component, the difference between annotation and detail component here is understandable. The inability to make instance dimensions constraints on Reference Line allow in project flexing is not. Maybe this is a bug? Or even just allow placement of Ref Planes in annotation components?

Try a shared parameter instead of the instant parameter..the shared parameter can carrie to the hosted family and the project..
