    Question Opening drawings

A question has come up in our office. We would like to set up a drawing such a way so that when the person who created the drawing is out of the office someone else can open the drawing an be assured that all the correct layers and viewports are on.

I the past we have had the problem of opening up a drawing and an engineering detail does not show up because of a layer or viewport being turned off.

    any suggestions?

David it would seem that you and your compadres should adopt a policy
wherein upon opening a drawing a layer state is set as they find the drawing
then they can do whatever they need to in regards freezing, or thawing, or changing
colors for their needs while working in or viewing the drawing and then upon
exiting that drawing or another user opening that drawing they can set that layer state
    current and end the confusion.

    Michael Farrell,

Thanks for the reply. I have been thinking about this and i think it is a good idea. It seems though that i have had problems in the past of restoring the save layer state and finding that it had changed.

Also there are two layer states in autocad, ldd which one is the best to use.

    David,

There are a couple ways to go here.
    A simple method, let's say I open a drawing
the first thing I do is to open Lman and create MJF1
this lets me know that this is how I found the drawing.
Anything that I might change regarding layers while
working in this file will be undone by setting MJF1
current prior to exiting. In your world I would substitute
your company name or some such nomenclature to
    designate the standard layer state.

Optionally, and probably ideally you would actually use
the multi-user functionality of MAP and each user would
have their own working MAP file within the project, they
would query in the data they were administering with MAP
perform the design, annotation, or edits that they were tasked
to do, perform a save back to the source and the layer state would
    never be an issue.

    Thanks for the reply,

why is it that you cannot set a final layer state that you can simply make sure is turned on when you want to have the printable version that matches the drawing on the hanging file?

The MAP idea is an interesting idea. Right now if i proposed this idea i would get run out of town on a rail. No one and i mean no one uses autocad map in our office except me. Also It looks like it might be more involved then the first solution.

    thanks for your assistance.

You could try writing a routine to automatically set the layer state on save or close using a reactor. If your layers are consistant from drawing to drawing, you could write the individual layers into the code in case someone played around with the saved state. Actually, even if there's a little variation in the names used -minor groups and status fields in the AIA format for example- you could probably still do it. Of course, all that may be far more hastle than it's worth.

I'm refering to visual lisp. I don't really know the other languages but I imagine something similar could be made with them as well.
A reactor is something you attach to the drawing editor that, well, reacts to a specified event such as calling the save or close commands. So when the user goes to save, the reactor triggers your program first, setting the layer state and whatever else you want it to do. If you think this is what you want, you may want to ask around in the programming section. Also, I remember seeing a thread on this very topic on, I believe, the Autodesk discussion groups board.
