Default AutoCad 2011 very slow in 3D & "not responding"

I need to figure out what my machine is lacking that makes 3D SO slow for me. Even just a simple task such as zooming in/out will freeze it and say "not responding". I'm sure this is a large file but could that be all it is? It is the only one I have tried doing 3D on so far (I just upgraded from LT).

attached is what my system has... and I am running Vista

(bear with me, I barely know about the components of a computer....)

I don't know what your graphic card is, but that could be one source of the problem. From what I gather 2011 is terrible with memory on 32bit systems, I can open our large models in 2009 but not 2011. We are going to be upgrading to 64bit Windows 7 as soon as the rest of our software is 64bit capable, hopefully that will solve the problem.

    This may also be useful.

It says I am capable of running 64 bit so maybe I should do that and add some RAM...?

Can anyone comment on the graphics card? Is it okay?

Definitely add more memory. If your needing to get by as cheaply as possible, add 2gb more memory and see if that help out enough. If it still doesn't get you to the desired performance you can then upgrade to Win7 64. I would also plan on adding additional 2 to 4gb of memory if you do upgrade to Win7 64.

I would also look into upgrading the graphic card. Your current one is meant more for general office computers and not for CAD work. You would want to look at the Quadro FX line.

I've been experimenting with a 64 bit machine running Windows 7 with 8GB of ram with AutoCAD 2011, and I am having the same problems too.

I've tried all the "tricks" to make AutoCAD run faster (eg. layer palette = OFF, savefideility = 0, etc.) with no such luck.

I will get a "not responding" message and crash while doing the most innocuous task like click on a polyline.

Go into 3DCONFIG, MANUAL TUNE and uncheck "Enable Hardware Accelerator" This has worked on a few of ouyr machines.

Windows 7 seems to be much quicker to issue "not responding" and similar messages than any earlier version of Windows.

Got a new graphics card today. About to install. Hopefully it will do the trick. The one I had was basically useless for CAD.

New one: nVidia Quadro FX 1800

    ...will update soon
