    Cool New User, Creating Families..

Our Company is trying to get more comfortable with Revit MEP 2010/2011. I was wondering if anyone had any links, or tips/tricks to create families in either Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing. thank you!

I'm on the same boat you are. I found useful asking question on this site. Looking at the family templates provided with Revit MEP, and also the Families Guide MEP provided on Autodesk Website. Here is a link that may be of use for you:

Check out some of the blogs on the subject. Inside the System, and REvit Op-Ed are great resources. And ask any specific questions here..they can usually be resolved. Also, keep the families simple, and use spec. sheets. I find most of the manufacturer's equipment is nice, but over built, ie render settings, and nested objects. Build a few fams, and you'll be on your way.

Autodesk University classes are another good resource. I can personally recommend a few

Joel, that's cheating. But, I will back you up. I've been to your presentations for the last 2 years of AU, and you and your partner definitely put together a good presentation!

This is an abbreviated list of what you need to do:

    1. Select correct template
    2. Add reference planes/lines to create basic framework of symbol
Select two planes for origin point, should be the front/back and
    Left/right planes
Select planes – properties – is reference – (select)
(this is for snapping geometry like lights into grid, use in 2D symbol)
    3. Dimension all reference planes and label with parameters.
Dimension length, select 'label - add params', and create new
    Parameters or use new
    4. Create solids forms thru home – forms – extrusion
Start with left view – create and lock via icon to constrain dimension
Move to other views (ref. level) to finish extrusion and lock
Select 3D object – visibility – uncheck plan/RCP, coarse, and
Medium (to avoid 3D geometry appearing in 2D view
    5. Test geometry by changing dimensions

All that info gathered from Autodesk resources.
