Default Revit Laptops & Dual Monitors - Can it be done?

We've found that laptops running Revit Structure work incredibly well anytime anywhere (especially when those deadlines are looming) and we want to buy new ones to replace our aging desktops for the switch to 2011, but still want to keep our current dual 21" monitor setup when in the office.

Has anybody done this successfully, either with or without some sort of docking station? I assume those single cable USB docking stations with built in video cards would not work well with Revit...

Will a high end laptop with a DVI output support a split cable dual monitor setup like our current workstations? (I think I just answered all my own question as I typed them out...)

Ideally we would want the laptop set off to the side out of the way and its screen to turn off when connected and display on two larger external screens.

Comments / suggestions or personal experiences?

It also seems that DVI might be phasing out... it's hard to find laptop specs that specify that they have DVI ports.

Might DisplayPort with some kind of adaptor to DVI monitors be an option?

Noticed a lot of them are coming with HDMI ports now as well....

Looking at the Dell Studio 17 laptop right now wondering how its touch screen would work with Revit...

It would be great if laptop makers included two mini-Display Port outputs... they'd easily fit on even the super slim laptops.

The issue that's really messed up advancement in the laptop space are LCD projectors - almost all of them have exclusively used VGA inputs and so even a lot of high-end laptops often include a single bulky VGA output. It's slowly starting to change, but it's kind of ridiculous.

The closest thing I've heard of for getting more than one external display on a laptop is this device from Matrox:

I don't have any experience with it and I don't know anyone who's used it with Revit. Their FAQ indicates that it's not a graphics card replacement - it still dependent on the laptop graphics card (which is good, because Matrox hasn't kept up with nVidia and ATI). It also indicates that you'll need two identical resolution external displays. I'd suggest doing some research on it, but I'd be really curious to know if it works well with Revit.

I am currently using dual 19" LCDs with my Dell Precision laptop.

The laptop sits on a docking station which has one VGA port and one DVI port. The monitors look identical, but obviously they have different connector types.

Works fine for me, no problems using Revit or anything else.
