Default example of how to NOT name a family type

We found this in a light family we downloaded. Part of the reason why I tend to avoid using manufacturer families.

Type Name: This family is not loaded correctly

It sure made for some interesting warnings when the ceiling for the light was moved in a way Revit didn't like.

I think the trick is that the type is supposed to be loaded from a type catalog. By making a single type in the RFA that offers a warning in the name, you know that it hasn't been loaded right. Of course a better name for the type might have been "You should be using a type catalog!"

Yeah, you definately need to load that family. There should be text file associated with it that creates all the instances. You might find it is great then.

Ah i see. The type catalog file is a separate download or you can download both as a zip file.

I would have to say a better type name like Gordon suggested would be a good start. Maybe there is a better way on Seek to get you to download the both files instead of breaking it up they way they did.

I agree, there needs to be a way on SEEK to know that you need both the family and the type catalog.

In your opinion would a read-me file help? If not what other piece of information would help?

I only ask because we have been working with SEEK to build content and would not want to see this happen with a piece of content we create.

    Thanks in advance.

I would say that either there is no separate download of files - only a ZIP with all the necessary files or a big alert that pops out that says download these files to get the whole package. Personally I would favor one file to download that gives me the whole package.

Maybe ZIP files should be pushed to the top of the list for download options.

Given that RFA files compress nicely, they should just put everything in a ZIP wrapper and be done with it. Even a single RFA is a faster download in a ZIP wrapper. No more missed type catalogs, and less time/bandwidth cost to boot.

Just a quick poll here. I make Revit models for various companies. Some want the family list populated, some want a seperate text file so it can be imported and the instances the user wants can be selected. What do you guys prefer? It is quicker to create a family with a text file, so I am starting to lean that way for creation. Just curious.

If there are more than 4 or 5 types in the family, go with the type library text file. If it's only a few types then might as well just make them in the family itself.

I would say anything between 1-10 types could all be in the family. Beyond that should use the type catalog.
