    Default DOMED ROOF STRUCTURE

I am currently working on a project that has a domed roof and I'm trying to figure out how to model the structural steel for it. I've tried drawing a curved detail line and then picking it when placing the beam but that will not work. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

Depending on how you want to create the roof structure / Dome.

I have attached an example by drawings 3d arc's in AutoCAD and importing the file into Revit.

Then using the framing Tool, remembering to check the "3D Snapping option" I select each line. To create the curve framing members.

Thank you very much. I will give that a whirl. I basically tried that but with using details lines and it didn't work. I'm starting to wonder if I had 3D snapping checked.

No luck. I tried drawing an arched detail line in elevation and then I clicked on the beam command but it wanted me to a plan view. Not sure what am doing wrong. Whether you draw the lines in AutoCad or Revit shouldn't matter, but how did you actually get the beams to follow the curved lines? Are you using 2010 or 2011?

If you're going to use curved lines to snap to, you need to use model lines.
Also you will need to adjust the height and central location of the member as the model line will just be at the associated level.

Create a framing elevation view on each line. Once in the elevation view, you will be able to select the lines to turn into beams.

If I try and draw an arched model line in an elevation view it prompts me to pick a work plane. Not sure what work plane to pick since it is arched.

Under Elevation, there is framing elevation that automatically sets the work plane and view range.

Another method (the one I use) is to create a solid sweep. You need to define a path and then select a beam component to run along the path. I make one, then group it, and do a circular array. Then I can edit just one member to update all of them.

    Tom,
I would appreciate a more detailed explanation of your domed roof structure method. I'm using Revit Structure 2012 and struggling to recreate your domed structure. Problems setting a proper work plane, loading a different profile (two back to back metal studs) etc. I keep trying to draw a curved beam in elevation and as you know Revit continually asks for a different work plane...can't grasp the concept.
    Any help would be great,
