Ok,, based on that, (and presuming the xref folder is named XREF) then the relative path from the drings to the reference files would be XREF\filename.dwg

    or you could use .\XREF\filename.dwg

just exactly what have you been using for the relative path?

Why change the drive letter on your server? That is too costly of a change to an AutoCAD system.

If his people had followed the standard, it wouldn't be an issue.

It still could have been if things could not have been made to be relative.

Well, asking "why change the drive letter" is like asking people why they ride the short bus. The IT department doesn't know the first thing about AutoCAD, nor do they care. They will point out how well thier file server works and how stable it is. They kind of do what they want.

The real answer, now that I'm done railing on the IT department, is this - The drive letter changed because the project originated at another firm, was then moved to our firm and our server, then our firm split into two offices and the project was moved to the second server at the new office location. There are some projects that are actually still looking at the original firm's server drive letter, some that are looking at our first server drive letter and some that worked just fine.

I'll try messing around with them some more. Thanks for the info so far guys!

I have used relative paths for years with great results. I use relative so when I move a drawing from the server (its normal location) to my laptop (its temp location) so I can work on it on the plane everything still works.

I recently received two new computers (one desktop and one laptop) with Windows 7. Now relative doesn't work and I haven't been able to determine why. I have tried windows paths, file paths in Autocad and xref paths.

For a test, I created a new drawing and attached one xref. When I look a the xref info I see that Autocad saved the file as just the file name. I can't determine if it thinks this is the file name or if it thinks it is a relative file name. I save the drawing and immediately reopen and the xref can't be found. I click browse and find the file manually, tell it to save, close and reopen and we are back where we started.

I too would be open to suggestions to resolve this issue.

    I'm using Autocad 2011.

Part of my problem is because the xref path is not being saved when the xref is inserted. If I immediately go to classicxref and save the path then the path data is retained. This does not resolve the relative issue.

Under File Name it shows 'filename.dwg'. Under Reference Name it shows 'filename'. Under Saved Path it shows nothing and under Found Path it shows nothing.

"filename.dwg" means it was saved as "no path".
Acad should always find a file that's in the same folder as the host.
