Default Using formulas but not in families, is it possible?

All the information regarding formulas that I've found deals with families only. Is it possible that when I'm laying out a room, for instance, to set the y-dimension to always be double the x-dimension.

    y-dimension = x-dimension*2

or say if i want my area to always remain 400 SF

    y-dimension =400/x-dimension

This would probably only be useful at the beginning of the design, but I'd thought I'd ask.
Is it possible to use formulas in the architecture environment or is it just the family environment?

    Thanks

Formulas can also be used in calculated values in schedules and model in-place families. However, the behavior you are describing is not possible, as far as I am aware. Family elements in a project environment are not capable of having formulas added to them on the fly outside of the family editing environment.
