Default I want to allow multiple instances in the same place

I have a project with some extensive phasing and also a good bit of old piping that is going to be replaced in the same place that it is now. In one phase of the project certain portion of the piping will be replaced. In the next, some more, and so on for 13 phases, each with its own CDs. We will have to design more than one phase at a time.

The problem is that, if we use OOTB revit phasing it will disconnect things demolished in phase 5, even on our phase 2 drawings, destroying the ability to filter by system.

My intended solution is to create my own 'demo' project parameter and use this to filter the views by phase without disconnecting anything but the cut points where they will connect one phase to the next. (A soft demo, so to speak). The problem with this is that I we will have multiple instances in the same place (one existing and one new) which will give me an error message that I have read will slow down my.model, which is nearly unmanagebly slow as it is.

Is there a way to override the error and just say its okay to have 2 things in the same place?

I would recommend reading the link, it looks like doing multi phased project, you would want to set up views for the phasing and demolish things in different phases, but they should still all be demolished in the project, just at different times. This sounds like if this was done, there wouldnt be multiples: say if showing phase two, a demolished element in phase 3 would know that it is existing in this phase, but demolished in the next. Then use the view prop. to sort the views to the correct phasing. Side note, the explanation to this is in the coimments on the links, not in the body.

Thanks for the input, Stimmo. What you're describing is what I mean by the out-of-the-box way to do phasing. Visibility, in terms of what is shown and whether it is light (existing) or dark (new or demo) works fine with this method, but existing piping that is demolished in phase 2 disconnects from its fittings, making it impossible to put it on a system. I want it on a system on the phase 1 views.

How I think I can accomplish this is by using a "soft demo", a new project parameter that effects the visibility of the piping the same way that setting it to demo does (it is not shown in phases of future views, it is shown dark and dashed on demo plans in the view it is demolished in, etc). The only problem is this warning will pop up for every fitting.

The attached screenshot shows the connectivity issue.

Got it! Change the type of one of the duplicate fittings. Just duplicate the existing one so there are 2 types. If the pipe fittings are of different types, it won't show up as a warning. It's a work-around, but it'll work. In my case I can make an "existing" pipe fitting type and a "new" pipe fitting type and set up pipe types that use the appropriate fitting by default.

On a related note I'm going to re-post the phasing problem I mentioned earlier as a separate thread. Sorry if that comes across as double-posting but I want some input on my phasing plan and the title of this thread doesn't catch the attention of people who want to talk about phasing.
