I noticed that 2011 has the ability to deal with point clouds and wanted to know if anyone has experience with them. We just got a S6 and want to start playing with its scanning ability and see what we can come up with, so any tips are appreciated.

Our company just started dealing with point clouds for bridges, and let me tell you, it's not easy! It was easy to bring the cloud into Civil 3D, but depicting accurate information is another story. We have not had any proffesional training or anything on it yet, and it could be partly based on the hardware/software used by the company that provided us the point cloud (They use Trimble), but it just seems very innacurate for us to get elevations and such in Civil 3D due to the scanner only taking points every 2.4" and having problems getting accurate points because of reflection/insufficient light (or so they told us was the cause).
If you have better luck getting defined edges instead of random scattered points please let me know! The cloud looks perfect from afar but as soon as we zoom in close to get elevations it's just almost impossible to determine an edge of an object
Autodesk Labs has a Feature Extraction utility for point clouds. http://labs.blogs.com/its_alive_in_t...re-extraction/
