Default identity data in type catalog

I only found a thread from 2006 which asked the same question ......

I am just beginning ot use type catalogs (how great are they!)

I do not seem to be able to populate the identity data (Model/Manufacturer etc) and have to make my own (model/manufacturer etc)

Is this true - that there is no way for me to just fill in the ootb ones?

    Thanks

Does the Manufacturer change within the Type Catalog? From my experience, typically that would be something that remains constant, therefore you add that information to the Family just once and not worry about it. It's strange that the Model won't work. Are you only having problems with those two? Can you populate the other fields with data? The only thing I can think of is that it's not spelled exactly right (with proper capitalization).
so for example it should read:

    ,Model##other##,Manufacturer##other##
    123-456,Acme
    123-457,Acme
    123-458,Acme

    it can't read
    ,model##other##,manufacturer##other##

or it won't load in the data.

Yes, you can, but you have to provide a value in the actual family first. It seems that some of these types of parameters will change via type catalogs, but only if the parameter is not blank in the family.

I have begun creating a Type within all of my families called "Default" and in here I place "dummy" values for virtually every parameter. That way a Type Catalog can fill them out with the proper values. The Defualt also works great where there are multiple types within the family. Since you don't actually place the Default, and the family is always saved with it as the active type, after purging, you can get the families to update with all non-purged types quite easily.

    Fantastic - thanks Scott

    Worked a treat.

I think your 'default' type also sounds like a good workaround.

Phew - I won't have to change all my families then
