Default scale for Autodesk Material library maps

I am new to Max and started to use it to create renderings of architectural models imported from Revit.

I am using a shake roofing material from the Autodesk Material Library and need to adjust the scale of the map to look right.

What is the width and height scale based on ? I assume it is the setting for a 12"X12" area, so if I set width and height to 12" it is 'to scale'.

    Is my assumption correct ?

Also, is there any way to adjust the size of the sample ball in the material editor?
The ball seems to be huge since the material pattern appears very small.

    Thanks for any input.
