Creating a beam family with type catalog

I'm trying to reverse engineer the standard revit beam (UB) family with a new custom profile.

I have noticed that the standard revit beam families appear to use profiles to define the shape of the beam. So far, I have managed to complete the following:

- Created a beam family type catalog.
- Created a beam family that uses a nested profile.
- Created a profile file that correctly uses a profile type catalog.
- Created a profile type catalog file. Is this needed?


When I load the beam family into my project, I can select the types and their properties import correctly, however the physical profile of the beam does respond to the types.

Can some one point me in the right direction?

Unless somethings changed from what I remember... you cannot assign a parameter to profiles used in families that you could use in a type catalog to tell revit what shape to model a sweep in a family.
