    Is there a way to preview the settings for the templates in ASD2012

    You can click the big A -> "New" and when you have to choose the template, there is a preview on the right.
    I don't understand exactly what you mean.

    in preferences there are these choices of templates. is there a legend that defines and/or explains them....
