    Default File Linking?..Help!

    hello,

i've never posted before so i hope i can explain my problem well enough...

we have a 4 single family dwelling subdivision of which one house has been built and the other 3 are in the design process. the current revit file we are working originally contained the site plan, topo and first house construction drawings...now two other houses have been started on in the file and we realize that this will be too big of a file when all is said and done.

the goal is to have the capability to show the whole subdivision in 3D with all 4 houses and site work, but be able to work on the construction drawings for permits for each house in individual files. we understand the concept of the central file and linking but not sure how to make it happen, especially when two of the remaining houses are in process in the current file and the construction drawings for the first house are also in this file.

how do we break out the houses and how to we link them back to be able to show a comprehensive site plan with all four dwellings? is that possible? finding information for this has proven a challenge... hope someone can help.

    thanks!

if you don't want to use workset/worksharing then you can link all the file into one files.

just remember that when you link the individual files be sure that positioning of the linked files are "origin to origin" so that the four location of your houses will be in the right position.

You have a number of options. This is just one of them.
Create copies of the current file; one for each house and one for the site. In the file for house 1, delete all information not relevant to house 1. Do the same for the other houses. Don't move them on the site. Each house can then be worked on in its own file. Documentation for each house would come from it's own file. All the models can then be linked back into each other if you need to show the whole development in each house's model.
As was suggested, if al the models get linked back together using origin to origin they should place themselves in the same place they appear in the current model.
Not a lot of absolute right and wrongs here, just benefit sand consequences. Without seeing the model and how it was constructed it's difficult to say what other issue may arise.
