Default convert displacement map?? in 3ds max design 2011

    Hi,

is it possible to convert a displacement map into native polygons?

I have 3 pillows withs individual folds, created with a displacement map. Now I want to convert the displacement maps into native polys.

    How can I do it?

Okay, let me make sure I understand. You currently have a displacement map on an object (pillow) and you would like to "collapse" it down? If that's the case, let me do some digging...

Another option would be to use the Paint Deformation in Edit Poly to achieve the folds for the pillow case.

Okay, so I was able to successfully collapse a plane with a basic noise as the Displacement Map on it. The geometry kept the deformation when I collapsed it to an Edit Poly. I would suggest copying your stack onto a new object or cloning it before trying anything, Just in case...

I assume the Displacement map is applied via a material, that is why when you collapse it, nothing happens. or you wouldn't be asking that question.

I was able to convert it by applying a Displace modifier, then instancing/copying the displacement map to the Bitmap or Map buttons within the Displace modifier options. Adjust the Strength, then Collapse All or Convert to Editable Poly/Mesh when you are satisfied with the output. Just make sure your object have enough polygons to accommodate the deformations.
