    Default Detail Components

I am trying to get an elevation view of a steel joist from the detail component manager. When I select the joist that I want I have been able to get only a section view. How do I change it to elevation view?

I am using Autocad Architecture 2011

    Thanks

Once the component is selected, go to the design tab in "properties". There will be a catagory called Component with the type of view preset to "Section". Click on "Section" and a pull-down list will give you the options for changing the view to Section, Plan or Elevation.

Thanks for the reply. When I select the object and go to properties - Display it says that this object is not controlled by the display system.

    Is there some other setting?

Most detail components (once loaded) have more than one look for the 2d object. In the properties pallet (before placing the object) you can choose plan, section or elevation.
It's not a display rep thing, it's a function of the block that you are inserting. You want to insert the section component of a W12 or something.
I don't have access to ACA right now or I'd send you a screen shot.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks much. That certianly does help.

I played with the properties bar and find that it must be visible when you select the component and then you can select elevation. Now, I insert a steel joist shape, change the view to elevation and select a starting point and an ending point which works fine. But the joist end extends to the same lengh as the joist.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

When placing a Detail Component Joist in Elevation view, you need to click three times in the drawing (see also attached image):

First Click: Start point, which ends up being the leading edge of the web bar that runs into the seat.

Second Click: End point, which determines the location of the cutline, away from seat.

Third Click: Bearing length, based on distance from start point. After you enter the second click for the endpoint, if you immediately click again (thinking, perhaps as I initially did, that the command should be over after the second click, and, since it was not, that the second click was not registered), the bearing length will end up being as long as the balance of the joist. If you move back closer to the start point, or, better still, to the opposite side of the start point before making the third click, you will see the joist length ghosted in based on your current cursor location.

    Command line prompts:
    Command: _AecDtlCompManager
    Command: Loading AEC Detail UI...

    Insert point or [Base point/Rotate/Xflip/Yflip]:
    Start point or [Xflip/Yflip]:
    End point or [Xflip/Yflip]:
    Bearing length or [Xflip/Yflip]:

Why doesn't REVIT allow you to do the same thing?

    What kind of same thing?
Are you looking for a repeating detail component with a breakline attched to the end?
