Default Modeling of Pan Joist System:

first real modeling in Revit Structure4 project and it happens to be a Pan Joist system..

the problem beam is framed over a column and extends about 7" pas the column and will not trim to the back side of the column. attached is a plan view and a hand section (shaded area is the piece of the beam we are trying to remove.

anyone that can provide assistance to a newbie would be GREATLY appreciated.

    upgrade!!!!

rs4 is a beast to work with.
2012 just came out and its awesome.

even though concrete joins/framing are still troublesome.
in 2012 you could pull the beam past the column and then attach the column to the bottom
of the beam. not sure if that worked way back in 4. good luck

thanks for the idea, but 2012 is not an option for this project. out of house Architect and they are still running 2011. The last mtg, the plan was at the end of DD phase, all parties would move to 2012 but that is down the road a bit.

Did I miss something? If the architects are in RAC2011, then you should be in RST2011. As Jim said, UPGRADE to 2011 at the least!

We are running 2011, I can't upgrade to 2012 though regardless of any new features because the Architects are still running 2011. looking for a way to modify the end of the beam, newbie to Revit so I don't know if this is a problem with my technique or if it is an issue that the software can't do what I'm trying to accomplish.

looking for suggestions to try though.

I've done several pan joist buildings.
Revit WILL NOT model them 100% correctly OOTB. The 2 options are to deal with it and leave it look like ****, or spend many, many hours modifying and adding openings by face and generic models to accomplish it. Of course you get to do it all over again if move anything.
For the most part it gets close.
How did you go about modeling it? Any chance you could post a little portion?
Based on what I see, you'll need to use the opening by face tool to remove that little portion of the beam.

opening by face. or cut to a ref plane, but then you will have a ton of ref planes in your plans that cannot be deleted or you lose the cut. you could model it all ' in place' thus eliminating the annoying breakback/join behaviours between concrete columns/beams. i have put in a request a bit ago for a disallow join beam end command. apologies ...your original post said you were working in RS4. i thought maybe you were tucked away in some corner of the earth where software upgrades were 5 or 6 years behind. cheers and good luck.
