    Question Trellis

I am attempting to model a trellis that bridges between a new detached garage and the existing home. I would like to bolt 2-2X8s to each face of the buildings and span the 7' distance between them with 2 x 8s @ 24" o.c. These members will hang from the 2-2 x8s.

    On top of the spanning members I will then fasten a grid of 2 x 2s @ 16" o.c. perpendicular to the 2 x 8s.

How do I go about modeling this? I started to utilize the Structure - Beam Grid but it didn't seem appropriate.

    Thanks in advance!

If you are using 2x's I might think about modeling an in-place family.

You could try using a Curtain Wall Family
Change the Border Mullions to the 8*2
Change the Internal Mullions to the Trellis

Honestly I would just do it as a generic model family. Is the distance between house/garage set with little possibility of changing? Even if it does change, it would be easy enough to just go back in and edit the family.

What would be the downside to just using beams and creating arrays?

    antman,

I did exactly what you suggested. I used a beam here and a beam there and arrayed till my heart was content. It worked well and solved my problem without investing too much time.

I don't know if it's been fixed in 2012, but I was disappointed that 2011 doesn't have the ability to apply custom shapes to the end of a beam. I had to make mine generic models, but it just seems a lot more 'BIM' to me to create it as what it is...
