Memory Crash (running out of memory)

I have a coworker who is experiencing an issue with ACAD running out of memory on their laptop and shutting down.

It's AutoCAD 2011 Vanilla installed on a laptop which has wired network to it.

Dell Latitude E5510
Intel Core i5 CPU M560 @2.67GHz
Ram: 4GB (3.43 usable)
32-bit Operating System
Windows 7 Professional

This is the 3rd time it has happened. I believe he had only 4 windows open this last time… any thoughts?

Is this the first time?
Otherwise check if there is any other programs running in background.
Or there are any personal routines improperly loaded.

I'd suggest a smaller file or a much better laptop and upgrading to 64bit and dropping 16gb of ram in it.
When Acad needs memory, it needs memory.
Just for kicks, next time they start up that laptop, check to see how much available you have. Not sure what the 32 bit looks like, but if I remember right, win7 eats up almost 2GB of Ram on it's own. That doesn't leave you with much.

Thanks for the lead, our IT guys are looking at going down that road but we need to be sure it doesn't affect the other programs this user needs for his work as well.

Simply buying a 64 bit machine isn't a solution its an expensive work around so hopefully I don't have to destroy my budget because Autodesk cant figure out how to play well with others LOL.

but back to the out of memory issue (since we can't make autodesk play nicely with the other kindergartners) -- it's not just the open windows. Take a look at TaskManager on the problem computer, and look at the processes tab. that will give you a better handle on what's actually running on that machine and ow much memory each process is chewing up.

then you can try and figure out what's really necessary to keep going, and what can be stopped/ not started.

i am having a similar problem with invetor 2011 some things you can do is set aside some of the hard drive to act more like ram that will help a little. Do this by going to control panel-->System Properties-->advanced tab--> performance [settings]-->advanced--> virtual memory [change]. Then allocate more to to the paging file I have 200,000 MB for the initial size and 300,000MB for the max. Also around here you can change the way it looks to make your computer less pretty that will also help. i did this on XP i don't know how it might change on windows 7 but give it a try

Virtual memory/page file is on the HD so is inherently slower than real memory so it's even better to find other solutions first.
AFAIK, there is no advantage to setting the page file to more than 2 x memory size (many say 1 x memory size).
It's better again to set the max and min page file sizes to the same value so that Windows doesn't start shuffling disc allocations around in the background.

I didn't seem to notice it being that slow on Solid Stat drives.
Still not as good as the real thing, but in a pinch I've gotten some use with it.
Anyone else seeing any decent improvement with SSD's?
