Default AutoCAD 2010 on 64bit Machine

    Hi,

We have a few 64bit machines in the company on the rest are 32bit. Some of the guys using the 64bit machines have reported that when they switch between drawings they are getting a delay of anything from 20seconds.

If you open the drawings on a 32bit machine they open fine and you can switch between drawings no problem.

Is anyone else having the same issues and does anyone have any ideas what sort of thing I can look at?

Perhaps the same thing as we had with Revit 2010? It appears to be something to do with the ribbon taking too long to redisplay itself on 64bit. 2011 seems to work fine now, and one guy over here stated 2012 works even faster.

We are running Revit Structure 2010 on the 64bit machines and it appears to run fine. I know when you open AutoCAD you need to click on every Tab on the Ribbon so it cashes in its memory. Unfortunately we don't ungrade our software every year so we have to run with ACAD 2010 for now, well we only upgraded to ACAD 2010 at the beginning of this year.

Change your workspace to "classic acad" and get rid of the ribbon.
    Just my idea.

Yep, my AC2011 has the ribbon turned off by default - fortunately you can turn it back on without too much hassle. Wish it was possible with Revit though! But one of the guys here is already on 2012, and they seem to be happy with its ribbon performance.

A few things I'd advise not turning on all the time: Properties Palette, Layer Manager Palette, Ribbons when editing / creating hatches. Only turn these on when you're actually using them, as for ribbon hatches - I hate its incredibly high "viscosity", I wish there was a way to have the ribbon but use the older hatch edit/create dialog (this is my main reason for turning the ribbon off, the rest of its performance issues is not "as bad").

Yep, I'm on the classic. I haven't noticed anything I'm missing. Then again, I'm a typer. I try to use key command for everything, buttons on toolsbars for macros, or multiple functions. I haven't missed the ribbon, but then again, I've never had it up and running for long since I didn't like it.

Should this thread title be changed to "I hate the ribbon in AutoCAD"?
Actually I have turned off the ribbon all time since Autodesk brought the idea from Microsoft.

I don't mean to sound like an idiot (hard not to) but are you sure you are running a 64-bit version of ACAD on that machine? Is there any possibility that your IT department installed the 32-bit version? I just ask because we are running Win7 64-bit with 64-bit ACAD and C3D installs (not on the same machine obviously) and our regens are zipping right along.

Just my 1.3214 cents (current rate of exchange).
