Default Autocad 2008 crashes on dwg 2007 open

New member at AUGI and at forums in general so please excuse if this already is a thread or if it's not in the right place.

One of the users at my office cannot open dwgs with Mechanical 2008 without crashing autocad and I can't figure out why. The file was created with ACAD Mech 2011, saved in 2007 format and all the rest of us can open it. He can open all other files saved in the same process.

    Thanks for any insight

    Phil

Do you use the later version of AutoCAD (v2010 or the later) in your office?
If so, open that drawing by using the latest version.
Enter "xref" and check if there is any external drawing attached.
Bind the "xrefs" if you find any.
The reason for this is the "saveas" does not save any "xrefs" to the other version format.
The other things to check are that you need to ensure using Mech version of AutoCAD when open that drawing.
You may have difficulty when open the drawing by using vanilla version as it may contain entities created by Mech version.

We use 2011 Mech standalones in the office part of the building - in the shop part of the building, they use older 2008 mech standalone licenses. We do have xrefs and we tried saving all ref'd documents in 2007 as well, but I'll try to bind the drawings and see what happens.

Seems to work when we bind the xrefs, but this is counterproductive as we need to update our drawings regularly. The other option we are working with now is to: Partial read-only open the files; and ensure that xrefs are unloaded at open while maintaining all active layers. This works but only one person can access the file at once.

    Thanks for the input
