    Default Xref relative path

I've been away from the game for 2 years now but I can't seem to figure this one out. When I attach an xref, it automatically saves the entire xref path. Is there a way to set all future xref attachments to be relative?

Usually within the xref dialog there's a place to select the path type. You would select "Relative" before hitting "OK".

I'm in 2011, so I'm not sure what your xref dialog looks like

Ah-HA! The ol' "hiding in place sight" trick! Ok, after doing that, it still isn't working, though. This is what I get:

    Command: _XATTACH
Overlay Xref "new block": ..\..\..\..\Documents and Settings\All
    Users\Documents\Projects\374-Paradiso-MB\Drawings\Xrefs\new block.dwg
    "new block.dwg" cannot be found.
    *Invalid*

Am I supposed to set up something else so this works?

    Hmmm, I dunno?
Maybe something wrong with your file name or location?
Make sure you don't have a block name in the same file with the same name. Like a block named "new block" inside a file named "new block.dwg". Also, maybe try to move your xref file in the same folder (or a folder away) from the dwg you're trying to attach it to.

Ok, while putting both files in the same folder worked, I don't remember having to do that at another job I had where I'm pretty sure we had it set to relative but we had sheets and xrefs in separate folders. I'll try to do some more research on that and see what I come up with.

Thanks for all your help, tedg!

What is the full path of both the parent drawing and the xref drawing?

It's an IT thing. Some networks work better than others with xrefs. You should have no problem setting relative on your C: drive. I'm in the same situation and what I do is edit the "Found At" line at the bottom of the selected xref in the "External Reference Palette", then hit Enter. A single period for current directory (.\) and two for parent directory (..\).

In your case "..\Xrefs\new block.dwg" would be the same as ".\new block.dwg". If you have trouble post both paths and either Rick or I should be able to get you started. Once you see one that works it's easier to understand.

That was just a test to see if your file directories were giving Acad trouble, you would want to keep your desired directories if possible. Tom and R.K. are helping you more than I can.
