Default ACAD 2010 opens slow on SOME computers

    Good Morning,

I have an issue that is driving me nuts. On my computer (Win XP SP3, Core 2 Duo, 3GB Ram) opens drawings from our server just fine - I am using Civil 3D 2010. I see no lag or hesitation when opening drawings.

People are telling me about multiple drawing sets where the drawings are opening slow - very slow. In fact they show me on their computer and it stops at certain points while loading XREF's and such. I even tried on a spare computer with Civl 3D and had the same problem with the drawings opening slow.

I thought it may be a setting within my profile - so I exported it from my computer and imported it to the spare. I continued to have the same problem.

I would think it would be an issue with everyone - can someone please give me some suggestions?

    Thanks

    Bob

Are you saying that a particular drawing opens fine on your machine but opens very slow on others?

If so, copy the drawing and it's references to the local machine and test again.
If it's still slow, unplug the network cable (and any other network connections like wifi), and try again.

(These are just tests, not a solution yet...)

Yes, On my machine - any drawing I open opens just fine - no hesitation and no delays. On other computers this same drawing will get to a certain percentage (as read on the bottom of ACAD) and pause, run for a bit more and pause and so on. This is not jsut one drawing but multiple drawings for mutiple computers - except mine.

I copied one of the drawing folders to a local computer (C and tried opening them - still the same results. I looked for layer filters or multiple scales and found nothing. I removed the XREF's from the drawing folder I copied local and opened the drawing again. It opened a little faster - but not alot - which I assumed was because the XREF's were not there. I opend the XREF drawing itself - which was from an architect - and it took about 6 minutes to open.

I have not unplugged the network cable - but could try that. I figured I eliminated the network by bringing the files local.

ANy more help is greatly appreciated.

Moving the files local is only so you can access them with the connection down.

I'm not saying that is the fix, but I have seen machines with something pointing to a non-existing drive or plot driver or something else on the network --- and Windows/AutoCAD will grind to a halt sitting there looking for it.

If there are NO network connections, Windows and AutoCAD won't even try to find whatever it may be, it will just ignore it and move on w/o any delay.

you might try swapping your network conncection at the patch panel/switch with one that acts slow. If you lose speed and they gain it, it would point to hardware issues on the network.

If no change, that would tend to rule out the networking hardware

I had have such experience long long time ago.
And yes, what rkmcswain suggested was the first step to look into the problem.
You may now to keep an eye on the CUI on their machines as they may have their own buttons, etc.
The other thing is to remove any personal add-on routines from their machines.
Let us known if this helps.

    Gentlemen,

Again thank you for your input.

I tried opening the file again on the computer next to mine and the drawing opened slow. I moved the set of drawings to the local hard drive and tried again - same result. As it was opening I went to my computer and opened the same drawing of the network and mine opened before the other and still another 2 minutes. I unplugged the network cable as suggested and there was a little improvement but not alot at all.

I do not see how it would be possible for my computer to be the only one to open these drawings properly.

    I am going nuts.

Could it also perhaps be something like xrefs not on a path similar to what's on your PC? Or even the other way round, i.e. your PC can't find the XRefs but theirs can - thus making the load slow down when theirs are loading these files.

Alternatively you might also have some object-enablers different between the PC's. Or the setting to "automatically check for enablers". If there's some AEC (or other) objects in the file it might be searching for the correct enabler - even through the internet (which could be extremely slow).

    Just a few more "suggestions".

Since I only have Civil 3D on my computer and do not have ACAD it was tough to compare the object enablers. I did look at the computer next to mine which does have ACAD and decided to install the ACAD Update 2. After installing this update it now opens drawings as I would expect - like my computer does. So, I thought I would try to do this same thing on another computer to see if the problem was resolved - needless to say it did not work on the others - I had to do a repair on the ACAD to even make it work again.

I thought that was the resolution - maybe it is and I did something wrong? I noticed it shows another ACAD under Add and Remove Programs - I think it was English Version 3. Is that right?

    Beyond Frustrated.
