Default Unable to Place Components in Linked files.

I am having difficulty placing components in my Revit Architecture 2012 model. They are wall hosted (outlets) & floor hosted (floor boxes).

I have taken the MEP, Base Building, Interiors, and Structural models and linked them into my new file. I have linked them in as overlay. Should I have changed the reference type to attachment?

When I go to place my components I recieve the following notifications from Revit and am unable to click any walls or floors:

"Click on Wall to place Instance" (outlets)
"Click on Floor to place Instance" (floor boxes)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Elements that have a specific hosting condition, ie wall hosted, floor hosted, etc cannot be placed on a host that is in a linked file. If you need to host families to host objects that are in a linked file then you must use face based families,

So when I download manufacturer content and it is wall hosted it's pretty much useless? I'm an electrical engineer who uses Revit MEP so all building walls ceilings and floors are referenced. Is there an easy way to change the host parameter? From what I've gathered that once the family is created the host parameter is locked.

to my best knowledge, you still have to convert family to face based, 2 options:
    1) use MEP to copy/monitor these families from arch model to mep model, not all categories can be converted, besides, may have flipped workplane issue
    2) use API to convert to face based families, it's available in previous version too

This is one of my biggest hurdles so far with revit. Still a noob here and don't quite understand this process, expecially the copy/monitor colaboration functions. Just cannot get these to work for us.

Low Voltage consultant, we start a new project, link the arch revit, link the mech revit, link the stuctural revit and link the electrical revit
All of these links are absolutly required to properly design our systems work. Not being able to insert our componets (families) to the linked models is beyond frustrating.
